While growing up, I was always the kid that didn’t feel real comfortable in my own body. I had issues with weight throughout my child hood and all the way up until high school. While playing high school sports, I was able to maintain a good weight and “felt” like I was a decent athlete. After I graduated and life started, my old childhood issues ramped back up. With no drive to workout and an awful diet, the weight just kept coming. I battled that for most of my adult life.

About 5 years ago, my wife and I started at a local CrossFit, but I really couldn’t get into it. I didn’t feel comfortable at the gym we were at and kept making excuses for not wanting to go or be there. During this time, my weight increased up to 270 pounds. So like most, I started hitting 24hr Fitness doing what I could but with no drive and no accountability…it was tough to make any progress. During this time, my wife had switched to CrossFit 190 and was getting amazing results from Corry’s coaching. Shortly after seeing her gains and a little “push from her to come try it out, I came in for Crossfit round 2!

Since day 1 here, I have felt so comfortable and that has everything to do with the athletes in the gym and the coaches that pushed me daily. After a couple of months of learning the movements and getting more comfortable with them, I started to see substantial weight loss. I was down to 240 and felt better than I had in years! About this time, Corry gave me a run down about the Paleo diet and that is when my life changed! Soon after, I quickly started dropping weight and getting stronger daily with his programming. After about 6 months at CrossFit 190, I went from 270 to 215 on strict Paleo and 5-6 days a week training. Since then, it’s been a year and a half and I’m still going strong. This has become my home away from home and I have made some life changing relationships with people here. I am so glad my wife got me to give it another try. I can assure you Corry and the coaches will do their part but it’s not going to happen without you doing yours! Get in here and give it a try. I promise 190 won’t let you down!

Before I started CrossFit, I was in a deep depression and used food to try and cope with the miserable way I felt on the inside. I had just gotten sober off of drugs and alcohol and has just lost my mom to cancer. I was using food as a means of escape. I felt isolated, didn’t want to be seen in public, and I distinctly remember looking at photos of myself in disbelief of how far I had let myself go. I was on antidepressants and barely any of my clothes fit. Any time I would go out, I always felt extremely self-conscious and insecure. My weight and self-esteem not only affected me emotionally and mentally, but it also affected my relationships with others, even thought I couldn’t see that at the time. It affected my ability to show up and be the best version of myself towards my fellow woman and people around me. One day, in Spring of 2013, I finally reached a breaking point. I cried out to God and asked Him for help. My posture was that of, “I can’t do this, but you can. Please help me!” And He did. It was not long after that that I discovered CrossFit,

Before starting my foundational classes, I began watching YouTube videos of overweight people getting fit through crossfit to psyche myself up!! This really helped me start to believe that it was possible for me too. When starting crossfit, I was BROKE. I was living at my Aunt and Uncle’s and waiting tables and barely coming up with the money to afford a class. I made the decision that cross fit was a NON NEGOTIABLE and I absolutely had to go. God always provided the money, and still to this day is!! I believe that the excuse that CF is too expensive is a cop out!!! I came to the realization and this was my life, and my health depended on me making a commitment to this.

So I started the classes and could barely do anything. I was so out of shape I couldn’t even do an air squat without a box to sit down on at the bottom. I was the slowest and frequently the last person to finish the workouts. I remember praying and asking God to help me get through the WODs, but I kept showing up. It was immediately suggested that I attempt a 30 day paleo diet challenge. I didn’t think I could do it and I especially didn’t think I could live without cheese. But I did. Once I started to change my diet was when I started to see some real results. The next challenge I did was a 90 day challenge. More results. The weight started to fall off. I started to feel better about myself and started buying different clothes. By spring of the next year, I was able to get off of antidepressants. I have continued to do paleo challenges on and off throughout the past 3 years and have lost a total of about 60lbs, gained a whole lot of muscle, a new perspective on life, a spring in my step and a ton of self-confidence that I never had before. I am in the best shape that I’ve ever been in and am able to show up for others in a way I couldn’t before. If you’re thinking about joining CrossFit, DO IT!!! It was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made for myself.

Advice:  Commit to 3 days a week. 1 day on, 1 day off. Do a paleo challenge. Drink a lot of water. Talk to people, keep yourself inspired and accountable. You can do this!! Also know that everyone sucks when they first start crossfit. 😉

CrossFit 190 has changed my life forever, I say CrossFit 190 because I truly believe our gym is unlike any other. Coach Corry is fantastic, he is focused on his athletes living healthier, stronger and more confident lives. I have always been athletic but not truly strong. As I got older, my body changed and I wasn’t capable of performing the way I was used to. I never had to work hard to be athletic and compete. Then 1 year ago, I realized I was truly unhappy with the way I felt. i starting losing my confidence and was embarrassed to be around people unless I was in jeans and a hoodie. I was 175 lbs and felt gross! This is not the life I wanted.

Some friends had been doing CrossFit for over a year and anytime we were around them, that’s what we talked about, but I was intimidated by it. When I saw CrossFit girls, I saw strong and fierce. There was no way I could do what they do. i wanted to get there though, so I decided I have to start somewhere and I tried it. One class at 190 and I was hooked. I came back for more! Corry worked with me and scaled the workouts so I could do it and I felt accomplished, I could actually do it. I was so sore and tired but I wanted to be confident, strong and healthy again so I realized I had to fight for it.  One of the best things about CrossFit is anyone really can do it, it doesn’t matter your age, weight or physical setbacks. you can scale anything for anyone. I was determined to be a better me and CrossFit gave me that. My competitive nature kicked in and I had to get better so I wasn’t at the bottom of the board every day. I started coming 5 days a week and committed to my nutrition. I educated myself on good foods and what my body needs to perform at its best. I lost 15 lbs in 2 months, working my butt off i might add, literally. I wanted more, I wanted to lose more, get stronger and have the muscle tone. I am now down 35 lbs but have a lot more muscle. I went from 32% body fat to 18% body fat in 1 year. Strong truly is beautiful and I feel it. For once in my life, I truly feel beautiful! Nutrition is a huge part of being fit and strong and Corry educated me on that, not many coaches will do that. I know that CrossFit 190 has changed me forever and I love who I am now!

All through high school I was involved in athletics. I never had to worry about my weight and could really eat whatever I wanted. Then graduation came and so did the dreaded “freshman 15”. I was really uncomfortable and embarrassed of what my body looked like. I resorted to meal replacement shakes and an occasional boot camp class at Lady of America. After months and months of my friend nagging me, I FINALLY went to my first CrossFit class. I liked it… and I decided to join. For a year I went 3-4 times a week… okay, 3-4 times a week was on a GOOD week, sometimes I only made it in once.

In March of 2015 I decided I wanted to get bikini ready for a cruise my husband and I booked with friends. I became DETERMINED to lose weight. I wanted to lose 10 pounds. I started coming to the gym 5 days a week and weighing myself daily. I became obsessed with the scale, if the scale went up by a pound I would punish myself the next day by skipping meals. My weight loss plan was working PERFECTLY! I lost my ten pounds, actually I lost 11 pounds. On top of my glorious weight loss I began doing better in the gym! Sounds like the perfect scenario right? Wrong. Talk about a horrible life style. WHO WANTS TO SKIP MEALS?! Not this girl! I’m so thankful for the day that my mindset switched from wanting to be skinny to wanting to be strong. So cliche, but being strong IS beautiful. I’m so thankful that I no longer obsess over the weight on the scale but I obsess over the weight on the barbell. I don’t eat to be skinny – I eat to be strong.

My advice: DON’T BE SCARED TO TRY CROSSFIT!  ANYONE can do it! EVERYTHING can be scaled down. You WILL surprise yourself. You will become addicted to bettering yourself physically and mentally. Last but not least you will become addicted to the community and make lifelong friendships. I’m so thankful for my 190 family and the life change that this gym has helped me achieve.

Prior to starting Crossfit I was overweight by at least 20 lbs and had been struggling with getting the weight off and feeling good about myself for years. I wasn’t struggling because I didn’t know how to get the weight off. I was struggling because I was truly bored of doing the traditional gym routine which I had been doing for so long. The thought of going to the gym and getting on a treadmill was repulsive to me. I was just so tired of doing the same free weights and cardio I had been doing for the last 10 years. That overall lack of enthusiasm and boredom caused a lack of consistent intensity in the gym and not sticking with the programs long enough to get the weight off. Then came Crossfit…..I now love going to the gym again and I’m eating great and training at an intensity that I never would have accomplished while doing the traditional gym routine.
Everyday is different—I never have to worry about trying to decide what I am going to do in the gym the next day. Corry programs all of the WOD’s (Crossift term for Workout Of the Day) and releases them the night before. I love the anticipation of seeing what the next days WOD is going to be and beginning to strategize on how I am going to get it done!
Relationships– I am not a super social person but I have truly enjoyed the relationships I have made in the gym. I love the fact that the gym is “smaller” so it forces everyone to get to know each other and build relationships. I think this makes going to the gym more fun and creates some accountability as well.
Intensity—This has been a really big one for me. One of the things I have realized about myself is that the best way for me to burn off the stress and anxiety of daily life is INTENSE exercise. When I used to go to a traditional gym It was fairly easy for me to do a round of free weights and 45 minutes on the treadmill and still be thinking about all of the things on my “to-do” list while the entire time. I didn’t actually de-stress. It is impossible to do a WOD at Crossfit and still be thinking about all of the things that are stressing you out in your life. I actually finish my workouts now and feel refreshed and ready to attack life again. And obviously, the high level of intensity will burn more calories and get you in better shape as well.
Competition—This is another one that has been huge for me. I am a very competitive person and since Crossifit ranks all of the workouts it forced me to want to excel. When I began I was at the bottom of the whiteboard every day. I simply didn’t like finishing in last place so I knew I had to get better as soon as possible. I can accept the fact that I am 34 years old and there will always be athletes who are younger, stronger, and faster than myself but seeing the rankings on the Whiteboard everyday still pushes me to perform at levels that I know I wouldn’t hit if I weren’t competing with my other friends in the gym.
My Recommendations
· FULLY COMMIT FOR 6 MONTHS— Come 4-5 times per week for 6 months (even if you are still sore). If you aren’t hooked after 6 months….QUIT!
· CONTROL YOUR EATING—Do the Paleo Challenge!!!!!!….Then continue to eat Paleo. If your goal is to lose body fat then you need to track your calories and be in a deficit every day. 80% of your results will come from your diet!
· LISTEN TO YOUR BODY– Listen to your body and don’t get injured. Continue to come every day but know your limits and be smart. You can’t achieve your goals if you’re injured.
· DRINK YOUR WATER—Drink water like crazy!!
· MOBILIZE—Spend time before and after workouts stretching. This will prevent lots of injuries and increase your performance!

Rewind a few months ago, I was self conscious and physically drained. After deciding enough was enough, I made the decision to join CrossFit 190. I am proud to say in less than three months, I have managed to lose 47 pounds. Joining CrossFit helped me turn my life around because now I exercise six times a week, completely changed the way I eat, and have more energy throughout the day. I never thought I would accomplish what I have so far, but the support from the CrossFit 190 coaches and members helped push me to keep going. Although I am still working on my fitness journey, I would have never been able to get this far without taking the first step and going to my first class at 190. The first class was tough, but the trainers helped me through and worked me slowly to get to the point where I am now. This has been one of the best decisions of my life and I do not plan on stopping anytime soon.
